Photography Gear

Troy Floyd
The gear I use is listed below.  Most was bought new, some not.  I have a wish list for a few more lenses one day.  My only handicap though is I travel all the time with this stuff and it takes up half my weight.  So although I could afford a few more things to my collection (that I would kill to to use) my bag can’t.  Still working and perfecting a perfect travel bag set up for me and will update this page when needed.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II

Canon EOS 5D

NEW: Purchased new from B&H Photo Video

Thoughts: LOVE LOVE this camera!  I have no complaints, other then that Canon won’t let you bracket more then three shots (which is kind of a pain if your wanting to do HDR photos).  Other then that, it’s hands down one of the best travel cameras out on the market.  I can do more with this camera in low light then any other camera I have owned before.

Sigma Zoom Super Wide Angle 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6

Sigma 12x24 Wide Angle

New: Purchased from B&H Photo Video

Thoughts: With a full frame camera it will allow you 122 degree coverage.  Sharp lens and great deal for the money!  Great for landscapes and architectural shots.  I use it all the time for shooting in tight spaces like; temples, street shots and close ups.  When I can’t fit it in the view-finder I go to it!

Canon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM

Canon 24-70mm 2.8

New: Purchased from B&H Photo Video

Thoughts: My “all-around” lens that I use.  IS is great and sharpness is overall excellent!    Stays on the camera 75% of the time and use it for street photography, people shots and anything else in between.

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Telephoto Zoom Lens

Canon 70-200mm

New: Purchased from B&H Photo Video

Thoughts: Expensive but well worth the money!  Almost anyone who does portraits or weddings will have this lens, as it’s a staple for most.  It’s bulk and takes a lot of room but when you want to reach out and get something or take a portrait from a distance, there is no substitute.  Hate carrying but wouldn’t give it up for anything.

Canon Speedlite 580EX II

Canon Speedlite EXII

New: Bought from B&H

Thoughts: I now carry two of these bad boys… and wish I could have three!  I use them all the time but not enough, as light is the key to all good photographs.

Gitzo GT2530 Tripod

Gitzo Tripod GT2530

New: Bought from B&H

Thoughts: Great quality tripod!  Light, easy to use and feels good.  When it comes to a good tripod its like your lenses…you don’t want to go cheap.  This tripod will last me a lifetime if taken care of.

LowePro SlingShot 200AW

Slingshot 200AW Camera Bag

New: Bought in a store in Springfield, MO, USA

Thoughts: I don’t like flagging myself as having a big camera but to be honest about it there is no stopping you once you have it out.  I like this bag for two reasons: 1) I can fit just about all my core camera gear needs into it and 2) When I want to shoot I just flip the bag around and bang I’m in business without ever having to take the bag off.  Sometimes I use the bag to brace myself (like a shelf) to help steady.  I found myself a while back not taking my camera out as much because it was to much of a hassle to get it out of a backpack, set it up blah blah.  I was missing shots because of my laziness (I know how bad) but this bag has helped me eliminate this.  Plus it fits inside my carry-on bag and still have room for other things.

Seagate – FreeAgent Go 500GB External USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive

Hard Drive 500gig

New: Bought at Best Buy

Thoughts: I have a couple of these.  I use one for back-ups and the other for crap files: music, videos, documents exc exc.  These are so cheap anymore and is a great way to add extra memory to your set up that doesn’t require much or external power.

In case you are wondering why I look so serious in these photos, it's because I had a good friend, Tim Steadman, who is a sports photographer take them. Let's just say that he works with athletes who don't smile and he kept saying the whole time "Don't smile man, put your game face on instead!" Now you know! :)
