One of my favroite photos from Varanasi
Everyone talks about how great Varanasi, India is and for most it’s a photographers dream spot. It’s one of the oldest cities in the world and a holy city for all Hindus. What draws people to this location is that locals creammate their dead along the banks of the River Ganges.
Truth be told I didn’t care so much for Varanasi but I think I just had bad luck when there. That being said I did go out a few times on a boat ride (about $3 USD for a private boat for an hour) and enjoyed snapping photos of people sitting along the ghats. The women above was about 100ft away from me but I had my 70-200mm lens (big lens for people who don’t know photography talk) and had the old man that was my boat captain slow down so I could shoot a few photographs of her. She just had this look of “Why am I here?” and it leaves a lot of room for discussion as to why. Maybe a death in the family, maybe she lives there or maybe she just wanted a peaceful spot alone. I’m not sure why but this photo always moves me because of that question.
I got some wonderful photos in Varanasi but not enough and one day will return to do it justice.
