“In 1984, Lik made his first trip to America and undertook to photograph all 50 states. The project was finally completed five years later and became his book “Spirit of America.” While in Alaska, Lik met photographer Allen Prier who introduced him to the medium format panoramic camera, a key technical advancement for the young photographer, and gave him the advice to “go big or go home.”
Back in Australia, Lik spent the early 1990s working for Tourism Queensland shooting the entire state. In the mid 90s
he opened a post card stand in Cairns, Queensland, featuring his photos, and soon realized his shots were extremely popular. In short order he started his own publishing company and opened his first gallery in the town.
The American landscapes still held his fascination and he decided to move to the U.S. permanently, finally settling in Las Vegas where he opened his own business, LIK USA™, to produce his fine art photography. He went on to open four galleries in Las Vegas, nine others across the U.S., and one in Noosa Heads, Queensland.
Lik’s popularity boomed, both with collectors and celebrities. By 2011 he had already sold over $200 million worth of photography. In December of 2010, his photograph “One” made history when it sold for $1,000,000 U.S.” ~ Wikipedia
My Thoughts:
Without a doubt Peter Lik is one of my favorite photographers! It not because he’s one of the most famous landscape photographers currently on the market or that he might well be the new Ansel Adams but because when you see his work in person, your jaw drops in aww. I seen his work recently in Las Vegas and nothing you see on the Internet is comparable as to seeing it in person. Most of his photographs are printed in a vary large format and it’s the print process (beyond just his photography skills) that seperate him from others.
He is a self-taught photographer and an average print starts around $20,000 USD. If you don’t believe me, just check out this site and see the costs there if you want to pick up a print.
What do you think about this artist? Is his work novel, original or inspiring? Do you know another artist who does similar work like this? Tell us your thoughts in the comments.
