  1. What is your first name: Jorge
  2. What city are you from: Trinidad
  3. What country are you from: Cuba
  4. What do you do: Bartender
  5. If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why: Would like to go to any socialist country and work.
  6. What’s your dream and why: For the USA to lift the embargo and release the 5 Cubans that the US government has locked up.

FOGG Notes: Jorge was working a at a bar that we were walking by and the first thing I noticed was that he didn’t look Latin.  I know that might sound bad but it’s the truth, so much that I think a lot of Cubans look American or European a lot.  Is that just me or does anyone else agree?  Anyways, he had this real classic look to him that just oozed 1950-era style about him.  What I mean is that I could have converted these photos to Black & White and said my grandfather had taken this photo back in the war and you wouldn’t have been able to tell the difference.  Then again a lot of Cuba oozes 1950 and guess it’s what makes it so unique.

I did find it funny though that Jorge wanted to visit any socialist country in the world to work in.  Coming from a communist nation and at war with a capitalist country (USA) made me think why?  Maybe he was splitting the difference and seen the worse of both extremes, thus his logic was the middle ground.  Again this is where I wish I knew more Spanish so I could ask more about that.  He was to my surprise the only Cuban that I met while there that stated he wanted the embargo lifted by America.  To my surprise, after doing some research after coming back, that one of the single biggest factors for the embargo not being lifted is because American-Cubans don’t want it lifted.  I thought that was strange but if you really think about it does make a little sense, seeing how all these people were kicked out of their country by Castro.  Can’t blame them if they still have a bad taste in their mouth from it.

Hey man. I think he was answering that way because he knew he was on the record. that is a classic textbook government answer and he won’t get in trouble by saying that (maybe he’ll even get a promotion). When I was in Cuba, people were surprisingly candid about their admiration of the U.S. and many young people openly said Castro was crazy… I interviewed a few Cuban Punk rockers on camera and one guy got arrested on the spot, just for talking to me. Nevertheless, his friends openly said Cuba was a Sh…thole and they wanted out. My trip to Cuba changed my opinion about the embargo. People are suffering, the government is not. We need to end the embargo NOW and watch the Cuban government crumble. As of now, they have a scapegoat (U.S. Govenrment embargo) for all the misery in Cuba. Cuban Americans are a minorty of voters.. why do they carry so much weight? They are in a swing state, Florida. Enough Politics.. we need to do the humane thing.. whew.. glad I got that off my chest.. anyway, nice photos and posts btw! Rob

Rob, I watched that video about the Punk Rockers… good stuff! Yes I got some strange answers from people while in Cuba and it pretty much summed up the point of: They were careful with what they said because “someone” could be watching. A shame that a person isn’t allowed to express themselves the way they want but it’s a reality all to common for a lot of people in the world at times.

I do have to counter that i do think Cuban-Americans have some pull just for the single reason that they care enough about this subject to vs. the American government that doesn’t really care as much about it. Case in point: Obama did tell Cuba that he was willing to meet and talk things over about the embargo but Cuba never responded (the govn’t at least). The sad fact is, is that the American govn’t doesn’t care about removing it because Cuba doesn’t affect them that much anymore (compared to the rest of the world, China for example). It was crazy seeing how time locked Cuba is because of the embargo and the Cuban govn’t sanctions on information allowed to be spread. Was sad in many ways. I hope it gets lifted one day but I think it will take effort from both sides before it will ever happen. Cuba stands to benefit the most if it is lifted and maybe the people will have a 21st Century Revolution and finally make their govn’t listen.

Read this new update about Cuba… I told you Cuban Americans had pull! :)

“But Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), a prominent Cuban American legislator, said the timing was wrong. “Promoting travel and widespread remittances will give the regime a much-needed infusion of dollars that will only allow the Castro brothers to extend their reign of oppression and human rights violations,” he said in a statement.”
