One of the first things I wanted when I got to Cuba the first night was a beer! I knew I would have plenty of time to try all the Mojitos in the world there, as in the end I’m a beer man for life. I pretty much knew they wouldn’t have Bush beer there and was excited about trying something new, something I had never seen before and something I might never again.
To be honest there aren’t that many local beers in Cuba. I mean after all it’s a rum nation and it’s not Germany, so knew I would have a limited selection. That being said, I was easily able to find a cold brew just about anywhere I went. Below are the beers I tried, with the exception of Bucanero Max and Mayabe, I think that was about it other then imports.
- Bucanero Beer: This was the first beer I tried in Cuba. I would compare it to being the Budweiser of Cuba. At 5.4% it had the richest taste of any beer I had while in Cuba.
- Cristal Beer: If Bucanero is the Budweiser then Cristal is the Bud-Light of Cuban Beers. If at a bar you could pick one up for about 2 convertible’s.
- Bucanero Malta Beer: Why am I putting up a non-alcoholic beer on this list…because people were drinking it all the time ! Let’s be honest…how many beers can Cuba have (5 total that I know of) as it’s not Germany with one around every corner. I tried it and it tasted like a really really sweet, grainy coca-cola. To be honest though I seen a lot of ladies drinking it mostly
Overall I liked Cristal beer best. Don’t ask me why but it was what I would order most when out. Beer prices at the bars/clubs here are comparable to American prices. I never went to a store and picked up a 6-pack but I would assume it would cost the same as in the US. Over all though I never bought much beer because I was always at an all-inclusive hotel…an I know I drank my money’s worth there!
