Faces of Ecuador: 011

People of Ecuador Photographs and Interview

  1. What is your first name: Evelyn
  2. What city are you from: Quito
  3. What country are you from: Ecuador
  4. What do you do: Retired and an avid pigeon feeder now
  5. If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why: Paris, France because I want to climb the Eiffel Tower and see the culture.
  6. What’s your dream and why: To be young again for a day so that I could do all the crazy adventurous things I did once before (and a few others).

FOGG Notes: Ok I don’t know where to start with this incredible lady.  Maybe that she worked for 4 Ecuadorian presidents or that she had 10 children?  How about the fact that when she was 15 she started a non-profit organization that helped teach trades to uneducated Ecuadorians?  That she liked to paraglide and hang-glide to teaching dance lessons like the Tango, Rumba and classical.  Or my personal favorite, she used to bullfight when younger and even got gored by a bull in the stomach (which she still bares the scar)!

You might think you’re an adventurous soul or that you have done a lot in your life…but after meeting someone like Evelyn you will know for sure that you have a long way to go to catch up.  She is 70+ years old and has no time to slow down.  Yes with the years she has had to take things more slowly but she still has a mind like a hawk and is very vocal about what she thinks (she did say I was handsome which I give her 2 points for that!).  Working in politics for 25+ years, being involved with humanitarian projects all her life and coupled by her adventurous soul makes her such a unique person that I think everyone should meet someone like her in their life time. Her favorite saying when visiting the USA was “English never…Spanish always!”  You got to love that!

Matt: Well sometimes I will just walk around and approach people on the street, others are people I got to talking with or known then later asked them for an interview (these are the best as I actually got to really know them).

In this case, she was my girlfriends grandma and I knew I wanted to write about her as she just had so much spunk in her that I couldn’t help but want to feature it. It’s not easy I will admit cold approaching but you’d be surprise at how many people are cool with it. My only problem most of the time is the language barrier as I don’t speak enough Spanish to be able to do it on my own.
