Everyone once in a while you meet a crazy person that you actually wish you were or will be. Patricio Puga is about 50 years old but has the energy of an Olympic 20 year old sprinter. He has a doctorates in medicine but forgoes the field to work as a tourist guide. He built is own home by hand (a work still in progress because he keeps adding more rooms and floors), is an amateur magician and is the toughest non-asian ping-pong player I have ever faced.
He took me out a few weeks ago for a Sunday ride on bicycles, as he wanted to show me what he does on the weekend for fun. This was the same weekend when I got the pictures from the Vino Graveyard. I don’t ride bikes much but thought why not, as he said it was all down hill to where we were going. What he didn’t tell me was that we had to ride them back up hill to get them out!
We took off and from the get go he blew me away. This little old guy was like Flash Gordon on a bike…I couldn’t keep up with him! To make matters worse everything to him was a challenge. The area is really designed for bikes and on any given weekend you’d see 50-100 other riders out there on the trail. 1/2 these riders you’d see are what I would call professionals. They had the uniforms, helmets, glasses…you name it. Every time we came up on a rider like that Patricio would yell “Challenge” and would be gone again. The ride we did was about 9k (?) but he said the one he normally does is about 40k.
If I have 1/2 the energy as Patricio does at 50 I’ll be batting 10!
