Bangkok Art Center, Thailand

bangkok-art-center-thailand1

I went to the Bangkok Art Center a few days ago, near Siam Paragon Mall.  I stumbled upon it one day walking out of the MBK Mall and popped in.  Its was about 8:30pm and the place was closing at 9pm.  At the time they were having a photo exhibition with Thai photographers on all the floors.  As a shooter I loved it but had to leave as it was closing.  I promised myself I would make a trip back and see all the exhibition.  Well I didn’t make it back in time, as when I finally did return the photo exhibition was gone and they had something else instead.  Something to do with art, design, fashion and movies.

Was kind of mad at myself for not getting back to the Art Center before the photo exhibition had closed but I did find a few displays on the new exhibition worth noting.  The one I liked best was “Product Design.”  Local Thai college kids redesigned or created new products with their idea on how it should be.  One girl was in the room and noticed me looking at everything.  Wasn’t sure if I could touch the displays (I did anyways) and she stopped me as I was walking out the door…thought I was busted.  She pointed at a white thing sitting on the floor and smiled.  I hadn’t really noticed it before but stopped to recheck it out.  I had to ask what it was after feeling kind of dumb.  She said in broken English “Tray for bed.”  ”Ah, now I get it!” I thought and looked more closely at it.  She knelt down and asked me “Comment, comment please!”

I’m not an art buff but the only real question I could think of was “Why did you design it the way you did?  What makes this bed tray different from all the rest?”  She quickly thought for a second to find the words to explain to me in English why she did.  The bottom right of the tray has a big gap at the side and will be used to store a morning paper.  The top was for all the food and was recessed to catch spills.  It came with a cup holder and had small shelfs underneath for silverware and other accessories.  It could also be doubled as a work station for bed (we are a lazy bunch of people anymore and why go to work when you can do it in bed, right?).

After she explained it all I have to say I was a little impressed and thought she put a lot of thought into something I wouldn’t have.  I asked if I could get a picture of her with it.  Posting two pictures, as one had a shadow of a model behind her and for some reason I like it (although it isn’t the better picture).

Thanks for taking the time to explain your project and wish you the best of luck in product design!
