$9 logo…why you got to love Thailand!

Today my agenda was to get some business cards for my new blog.  The idea is that while I travel I can hand these out to people I meet along the way so they can check out my blog.  Might be good for to give to people I randomly take pictures of and seem keen on seeing them later.  Then again maybe I just wanted to feel cool and have a business card.  Regardless of the reason I made it my mission for the day.

I jumped on the skytrain and head to Chatuchak Market, the largest market in Bangkok and if they don’t have it…it doesn’t exist.  I had already scouted a place and price compared so knew exactly where I was going to go to.  I found the place only to be informed that the little “generic” version I had made up she couldn’t do because I need an actual logo before she could make the business cards.  I asked if she could make one but she said no and told me about another place on the ground floor of the JJ Mall.

So off I go to get my logo, which I thought would be a pain in the butt to have made as all the online crap is over priced and boring to look at.  Never thought about having a local make one.  I found the shop and asked if they did logo designs.  He said yes and I asked how much.  He thought for a min and said “You give me 300baht I make!”  Works for!

I showed him what idea I had thought of and he set to work making it.  I really wish I knew more about layers in PhotoShop and graphic design but I’m still learning.  He makes the outline and finds some picture of the world online and starts to chop it up the way I need it.  He’s going pretty fast and after about 45min we had a design and I was happy.

So I went back to the first shop and told the lady I was officially in business now, as I had a logo, and could she help me now.  I knew what stye of card I want it on but that was it.  A young Thai girl about 22 plugged in a thumb drive with my design and as I was talking to the head lady she was throwing things together.  I didn’t know that was what she was doing until I look over and see a basic business card layout with my logo on it.  Was impressed how fast she made that from scratch and sat down with her to make final touch-ups.

We started playing with colors and layouts and the hardest thing we ran into was whether we were going to keep Australia and New Zealand on it card.  I said don’t worry about it but she gasped at that (she must of  had a Kewi or Aussi boyfriend).  We spilt the difference and just left New Zealand off the card, as I couldn’t fit the whole map on it.  I took a minute to look at it and something was missing but I couldn’t put my finger on it.  Then it hit me “Can we add a compass to it?”  She did a search on it to see what I meant and within 5 minutes she made one from scratch.  The sheer speed she did it in was freak’n amazing and this girl could be a graphic designer for any major website.  She slapped the whole together and bang I was in business.

You can see the “Troy” version of a logo and the $9 version.  Think it’s an easy decision on which one wins and glad i got some kind of logo that makes me stand out and people can recognize it that makes the site look somewhat different then blogger.com.
